IN THE RAW: RHODIUM

In the pursuit of excellence, every element matters – down to the very metal used in our finishes. At T&S Medals and Insignia, we’re proud to work with some of the world’s most precious and durable materials to ensure our customers’ insignia not only honours their traditions, but withstands the test of time. This month, in the fifth edition of In The Raw, we’re casting a spotlight on one of the most luxurious finishes in the industry: RHODIUM.

What is Rhodium?
Rhodium is a rare, silvery-white metal that belongs to the platinum family. Discovered in 1803, it is one of the most valuable metals in the world, and for good reason. Rhodium is exceptionally resistant to corrosion, oxidation, and tarnishing, making it a top-tier choice for high-end applications.

Though found in trace amounts in platinum or nickel ores, its rarity and brilliant finish have elevated rhodium to elite status in everything from fine jewellery to military decorations.

Rhodium in Action

  • Catalytic Converters in Vehicles: Rhodium is widely used in catalytic converters to reduce harmful emissions. It helps convert nitrogen oxides (NOₓ) in exhaust fumes into harmless nitrogen and oxygen, playing a crucial role in meeting environmental regulations.
  • Electronics and Electrical Contacts: Due to its excellent corrosion resistance and conductivity, rhodium is used in electrical contacts, connectors, and even in high-precision instruments where durability and reliability are essential.
  • Chemical Industry Catalysts: Rhodium is used as a catalyst in various industrial chemical reactions, such as the production of acetic acid and hydrogenation processes. Its high efficiency and stability under extreme conditions make it valuable in refining and chemical synthesis.

FUN FACT:

Despite its silvery brilliance, rhodium’s name is derived from the Greek word rhodon, meaning “rose.” This is a nod to the rose-colored compounds it forms during its extraction — a surprising contrast to its final cool-toned shine.

Rhodium @ T&S
At T&S, we select rhodium for its unmatched brightness and resilience, most often as a protective and aesthetic plating over other metals like sterling silver or brass. A rhodium-plated insignia has a striking, mirror-like sheen that enhances detail and gives a modern edge to traditional craftsmanship. It resists scratches and does not dull over time – a perfect match for medals and insignia that carry enduring significance.
